Stress and Anxiety

The hormones that control the menstrual cycle also impact on the production of Serotonin, the Happy Hormone and Cortisol, your stress hormone. So when Oestrogen crashes during perimenopause, Serotonin levels decrease and Cortisol increases. Bit of an unfortunate double whammy to say the least, and its topped off with poor sleep that results from the lack of Progesterone.

These changes play a big part in the increased sense of emotional turmoil that many of us feel in menopause.

Top Tip for Stress and Anxiety:

You are not going to want to hear this - but cutting down on sugar and caffeine can hugely help reduce stress and anxiety.

All these substances do is give you a temporary, unnatural burst of energy and then they rob you of your mojo later in the day when you crash back down again - the exhaustion and lack of motivation kicks in sometimes followed by depression.

Make sure you get lovely things to replace the sugar and the caffeinated drinks so you don’t feel like you are missing out.

There are lots of perfectly tasty sugar free products on the market these days. I use erythritol in cakes and my sugar loving friends never know!

I’ve also found some great decaf teas (I swear it's like a proper builders cuppa) and some chemical free (Swedish method) rich decaf coffee.

Have a look at some of our recipe videos on social media (I have put a link to a delicious lime, ginger and coconut cheesecake recipe on our Instagram for starters!) and you can also find recipes here on the website.
