Mood Swings

As I’ve already mentioned in the Stress and Anxiety and Depression sections, dramatic changes in hormone levels often affect mental health during the menopause transition. From fury and manic activity to weeping and exhaustion; mood swings are very common in perimenopause. For me it was like PMT lasted longer and longer each month until it settled in and I did what I needed to do to stabilise myself again.

Mood swings can be very disruptive to relationships with our nearest and dearest and leave us feeling out of control. Many of my clients describe feeling like they have had a personality transplant!

No. 1 Magnificent Menopause tip for Mood Swings: Qigong

Try this ancient movement practice to boost your happy hormones. Qigong is the grandmother of Tai Chi and Kung Fu. It is based on gentle repetitive movements and sequences that mobilise the body and calm the nervous system.

For me it was a game changer, it really helped to manage my mental health and relax my mind, and the effect is immediate.

I aim to do at least ten minutes a day, often when I take my dog out for a walk so I am in nature as it seems to enhance the grounding calming effects.

Have a go at this introduction video. It’s only 5 minutes. See if you can do it every day. Notice how you feel on the days that you do it in comparison to the ones you don’t.

If you find it as helpful as I do then get in touch and I can tell you more about the practice. I have follow along pre-recorded videos for managing different challenges that can present themselves during menopause.
